STORE BOUGHT vs. CUSTOM DRAPERY

DID YOU KNOW….

  1. Drapery panels should be hung HIGH and WIDE!
  2. At the very least they should sit 4” past the window on each side
  3. They should hang right up to the ceiling or just under the crown moulding.
  4. They should always have returns.
  5. Drapery panel fabric should be 2 - 2.5 times the width of the window in order for it to have proper fullness and avoid looking skimpy.

Store bought drapes - too short

STORE BOUGHT panels come in standard sizes, typically 84”, 96” and sometimes 108”.  They come in widths of 45” or 54”.  This means that with a pair of panels at 54” wide and 96” high you can only cover a window that is 36” wide with 8’ ceilings!  That’s it!!  Store bought drapery panels typically only have the capacity to hang on a 1” rod.

Custom fit to the window and the room

CUSTOM MADE panels fit any size window, including specialty shapes!  They will also fit any rod size and shape.  Custom panels can be made for 8’ ceilings or 2 storey high windows!

Your window is 80” wide and your room has 10’ ceilings

Here are some basics of what you will need for working drapes….

200” WIDTH =  4-5 pairs of store bought panels @ 54” wide, sewn together  OR 2 panels @ 100” wide, with quality seams allowing for patterns to match up perfectly.

115” LENGTH = Adding extra fabric to the bottom of any store bought panels OR perfectly fit 115” length custom fabric.

PLEATS/RODS =   Select options for pleats that typically cover only 1” rods OR endless pleat options that can cover any rod shape or size.

RETURNS =  No return options for store bought panels OR perfectly fit returns to fit your room.

COST = At an average price of $70/pair for store bought panels would be approximately $280-$350 PLUS the extra labour and fabric needed to fit OR At an average price of $20/yard, custom panels would be approximately $400 with standard lining.
